LITANI RIVER, SYRIA, 9-10 JUNE 1941
Lieutenant Eric Garland MC, No. 11 (Scottish) Commando displayed throughout the action cool and clear-headed leadership and a complete disregard for his own personal safety. With his men being cut down by accurate fire from a concealed sniper across the river Lt. Garland stood up to deliberately draw his fire and expose his position. As the sniper target him Lt. Garland through himself down behind his Bren gun and shot the sniper dead. For this and other actions at Litani River Lieutenant Eric Garland was awarded the Bar to his Military Cross.
